The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Okigwe came alive with joy and reverence on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, as the Catholic Diocese of Okigwe hosted a grand celebration marking the 25th episcopal anniversary of Solomon Amamchukwu Amatu.
The event drew an impressive gathering of dignitaries from across Nigeria and beyond, transforming the cathedral grounds into a vibrant scene of music, dancing, and thanksgiving by clergy, faithful, and well-wishers.
The Special Guest of Honour, His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodimma, attended alongside the Senator representing Imo North at the National Assembly, Patrick Ndubueze who also had as guest, Distinguished Senator Osita Izunaso from Orlu Senatorial District.
A role call of guests who graced the occasion included former military administrator of Imo State, General Ike Nwachukwu, Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ihuoma Ekomaru, PhD, the Speaker of Imo State House of Assembly, Chike Olemgbe, Hon. Chidi Ogbunikpa Samuel representing Okigwe state constituency, Hon. James Uba Esile, representing Onuimo state constituency, Hon. Bernard Ndubuisi Ozoemelam representing Ehime Mbano State Constituency, Secretary to government of Imo State, Chief Cosmas Iwu.
While members of the federal House of Representatives was led by Rt. Chike Okafor of Okigwe South federal Constituency, former Speakers of Imo State House of Assembly led by Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibe, Chief Tony Chukwu (Onweihekarichineke) Chief Alex Mbata, HRH Eze Oliver Ohanwe among others and Bishops from different dioceses across the country.
Others were Chief Sir Ken Okafor, Hon. Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, High Chief Charles Ijezie, SA on Rural Mobilization, Hon. Uzoma K. Nwokorie, SA on Ethics, Member representing, Okigwe Zone, IMSUBEB, Arc Amaka Mgbobu-onu.
In his homily, Bishop Amatu expressed deep gratitude to the dignitaries in attendance, particularly Governor Uzodimma, whom he commended for his consistent support for the Catholic Church. He noted that such support has significantly contributed to the advancement of God’s work and the development of society.
The bishop also praised Senator Ndubueze for excellent legislative performance towards the progress and development of Okigwe Zone. The Bishop while commending Senator Patrick Ndubueze for doing a good job at the Senate, said they hope to see light very arising from the 1/63 MVA Mobitra Substation electrification that is about to come on board. He expressed delight and thank the Senator for his commitment to the service of Okigwe Zone.
In his remarks, Governor Uzodimma emphasized the centrality of faith in leadership and personal success. He described Bishop Amatu as a worthy representative of Christ on earth, whose virtues have positively impacted both the Church and society. The governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting religious institutions and encouraged Christians to remain united in service to God and humanity.
He further commended Bishop Amatu’s exemplary life of service, praying for a worthy successor who would continue to uphold the same values of faith, humility, and dedication.
Also speaking, Professor Maurice Iwu highlighted his longstanding relationship with the bishop and acknowledged past efforts toward the development of the cathedral. He expressed confidence in the governor’s ability to support the completion of ongoing projects within the diocese.
The silver jubilee celebration not only marked 25 years of Bishop Amatu’s episcopal ordination but also stood as a testament to his impactful ministry—characterized by pastoral leadership, evangelization, and unwavering commitment to peace and community development.
The highlight of the event included the unveiling of a commemorative book and a fundraising session, during which Senator Patrick Ndubueze donated ₦10 million in support of the Church.
Overall, the occasion served as a powerful reflection of Bishop Amatu’s enduring legacy and the collective appreciation of a life devoted to God and humanity.
