One of the significant developments in this renewed healthcare drive is the appointment of Dr. Chioma Vivian Egu, a medical doctor and public health practitioner, as Commissioner for Health, Social Services and Health Insurance. Her appointment reflects the administration’s determination to deploy professional competence and experience in advancing healthcare delivery across the state.
Since assuming office on January 15, 2020, Governor Uzodimma has consistently identified healthcare as a critical component of his Shared Prosperity 3R Government. His administration inherited a health sector facing considerable challenges and has embarked on reforms aimed at rebuilding infrastructure, strengthening healthcare institutions and expanding access to medical services.
A major milestone in this direction was the establishment and expansion of the Imo State Health Insurance Agency (IMSHIA) across the 27 Local Government Areas. The programme has provided an avenue for residents, civil servants, local government administrations, lawmakers, vulnerable groups, persons living with disabilities, corporate organisations and individuals to access healthcare through an organised insurance framework.
The health insurance initiative has also created opportunities for residents to access various medical services at affordable rates, while the government’s intervention has helped to reduce the financial burden associated with healthcare, including major medical procedures and other specialised services.
The success recorded through IMSHIA created a strong foundation for the administration’s broader healthcare agenda and further strengthened the need for experienced professionals capable of consolidating the gains already made.
It was against this background that Governor Uzodimma brought Dr. Chioma Vivian Egu into the administration.
Dr. Egu is a specialist in Family Medicine with more than two decades of experience spanning clinical practice, public health, community healthcare delivery, health systems and medical education. Before her appointment as Commissioner, she served in various professional capacities, including engagements associated with health insurance and medical practice at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri, where she was involved in clinical, academic, women’s health and physician-training activities.
Since her assumption of office, Dr. Egu has brought her professional experience to bear on the state’s healthcare development agenda, with particular attention to maternal healthcare, immunisation, health insurance, service delivery and the integration of different levels of the healthcare system.
The recognition received by Imo State at the National Health Insurance and Managed Care Leadership Awards in June 2025 for excellence in provider performance management further underscored the progress being recorded in the state’s health insurance and healthcare management system.
The Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON), Imo State Chapter, has also acknowledged Dr. Egu’s contribution to advancing healthcare delivery in the state.
Beyond policy formulation, the Commissioner has demonstrated a hands-on approach to healthcare infrastructure development. In one notable instance, Dr. Egu, alongside the Chief Executive Officer of Healthland Hospital Management, Dr. Emmanuel Ogueri, undertook a pre-commissioning inspection of a newly completed 30-bed ultra-modern hospital in Assa, Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area.
The facility, constructed and equipped by Renaissance Energy Company for its host community, represents another example of the growing collaboration between government and the private sector in strengthening healthcare infrastructure.
During the inspection, Dr. Egu expressed appreciation to Renaissance Energy Company for its intervention and commitment to improving healthcare access in its host community. She noted that the facility would significantly enhance residents’ access to quality medical services and complement the state government’s efforts to strengthen the health sector.
Renaissance Energy Company has also expressed its willingness to partner with government in advancing health insurance coverage by adopting beneficiaries for healthcare services. The company further announced plans to provide five days of free medical care, including selected surgical procedures, for residents of the host community.
Perhaps one of the most remarkable developments in the state’s recent healthcare transformation is the completion and remodelling of the Imo State Specialist Hospital, Umuguma, Owerri West Local Government Area.
The facility, which has undergone significant transformation, is now positioned to provide specialised medical services at a standard far beyond its former capacity. Its emergence as a centre for advanced medical intervention has reinforced the administration’s vision of making Imo State a destination for quality healthcare.
The successful deployment of robotic surgery at the facility, involving Nigerian and foreign medical experts, represents a significant milestone in the state’s healthcare journey. It demonstrates that with the right infrastructure, professional expertise and political will, advanced medical procedures previously sought outside the country can increasingly be undertaken within Imo State.
This development has the potential to reduce medical tourism abroad, improve access to specialised healthcare and position Imo State as an emerging centre for advanced medical services in Nigeria.
The achievements recorded so far therefore provide grounds to commend Governor Hope Uzodimma for his emphasis on professional competence and strategic deployment of human resources. The appointment of Dr. Chioma Vivian Egu is particularly significant because it places an experienced medical professional at the centre of the state’s efforts to consolidate healthcare reforms and expand access to quality medical services.
