The Senator representing Imo North Senatorial District, Senator Patrick Ndubueze, FNSE, has called for an end to the use of derogatory terms in referring to persons living with disabilities in Imo State.
Senator Ndubueze made the call while addressing a delegation of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), led by its Imo State Chairman, Barr. Chidubem Uzodimma Ekwelem, during a courtesy visit.
The lawmaker reminded the delegation of the National Assembly Act that protects persons with disabilities from discrimination and derogatory labeling, noting that the law emphasizes inclusion and dignity. He urged the group to avoid using language that diminishes their status, stressing that they are recognized by law as equal members of society with special needs, not lesser citizens.
According to Senator Ndubueze, persons living with disabilities should see themselves as capable and valuable contributors to society, adding that mindset plays a major role in overcoming social stigma. He encouraged them not to relegate themselves to the background because of their circumstances, which, he noted, could happen to anyone.
The Senator observed that many persons with disabilities are highly educated and have attained academic heights equal to or greater than those without disabilities. He urged them to pursue their daily activities confidently and without feelings of inferiority.
He further advised the group to associate with men and women of proven integrity when supporting individuals for leadership positions, warning that electing persons without credible backgrounds often leads to regret and poor governance.
Speaking on governance, Senator Ndubueze explained the distinction between the roles of the executive and the legislature, noting that while the executive is often associated with project execution, legislators primarily focus on lawmaking and policy development. However, he said his approach to politics involves identifying and addressing the real needs of his constituents.
He highlighted key projects he is championing, including the proposed Federal University of Okigwe and the Mobitra Electricity Substation, which he described as critical to the development of Okigwe Zone. According to him, the projects will generate massive employment opportunities, stimulate commercial activities, and positively impact the entire zone when completed.
The Senator disclosed that plans are underway to engage top academic professionals from reputable institutions abroad as consultants for the university, adding that the institution is designed to offer unique, non-conventional programmes tailored to national and global needs.
Ndubueze stated that his motivation for public service is to build lasting legacies his children would be proud of, noting that meaningful development is a more effective response to youth insecurity than forceful measures. He revealed that over 80 persons have already been employed through his initiatives, with the university expected to generate over 1,000 direct jobs, aside from thousands of indirect opportunities. He also mentioned a proposed silo agro-processing and storage facility expected to commence operations soon.
As part of his support for JONAPWD, the Senator directed that an assessment be carried out on their office with a view to upgrading the facility. He also donated 30 bags of 25kg rice and cash support to the association for the festive season. Additionally, he requested that the group nominate one of their members to work with him as Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Special Citizens
Earlier, the Imo State Chairman of JONAPWD, Barr. Chidubem Uzodimma Ekwelem, praised Senator Ndubueze, describing him as a compassionate leader and “God-sent.”
He said that after reviewing the Senator’s contributions over the years, the association resolved to support and collaborate with him.
Ekwelem stated that members of JONAPWD across all wards, particularly those from Okigwe Zone, are prepared to support Senator Ndubueze’s return to the Senate for a second term. He thanked the Senator for identifying with persons with disabilities in their time of need and offered prayers for his continued success.
Other speakers, including the Imo State Secretary of JONAPWD, Mr. Onuchukwu Stanley, outlined the association’s leadership structure and operational framework. The Orlu Zonal leader, Hon. Ikenna Orisaeke equally spoke extensively on Senator Ndubueze's legislative activities and how JONAPWD relates with them as a forum, while the Okigwe Zonal leader, Comrade Ekene, delivered the vote of thanks.
